Passing of Jack Erskine
It is with a very heavy heart that I bring you the sad news that Australia’s famed reel designer, rod builder, and fishing master angler, Jack Erskine passed away last night.
In recent months, Jack has been working with a backer to create a large and very significant new chain of specialty fishing tackle stores in Australia. This energised Jack with a new lease on life. He bubbled enthusiastically about how big a deal it was going to be, and how they were going to revolutionise and raise the standard of the Australian industry. They were planning for a big launch in the months ahead. A few days ago, Jack called me from the departure lounge in Sydney airport en route to the US on a tackle-sourcing mission, and for a catch-up with his friend Johnny Morris of Bass Pro Shops.
Perhaps all the excitement was again too much for Jack’s system. He passed away in his sleep last night in Springfield, Missouri. Johnny Morris and his team are now assisting Veronica, Jack’s widow in Cairns, to make final arrangements.
If you have a memory about Jack that you would like to share, or would like to make a comment about the way he influenced the fishing world – or ideally, a humorous anecdote that demonstrates Jack’s personality – then please email a couple of paragraphs to me in the next few days. I will include as many as we can in the magazine tribute. Email them to: firstname.lastname@example.org
Jack Erskine delivered an enormous contribution to the world’s fishing community – particularly in the field of big game fishing tackle refinement. To lose this gifted craftsman is to lose one of the greats of the world’s fishing tackle industry, and the fishing community as a whole. It is with great remorse that I say farewell to a friend.
